Pape Sarr thinks that if Tottenham win their remaining five games – starting with Chelsea
n Thursday – they can overthrow Aston Villa in fourth
Pape Sarr believes that Tottenham Hotspur will qualify for next season’s Champions League ahead of Aston Villa if they win their remaining five matches this season – despite there being no mathematical guarantees that that’ll enough. While Villa contest the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final tie with Olympiacos tonight, Spurs travel to Chelsea.
As things stand, they’re seven points behind Villa, having lost their last two matches to Newcastle and Arsenal, but with two matches in hand on the Lions; the gap currently stands at seven points, but Spurs can close that to four with a victory at Stamford Bridge this evening. Champions League qualification remains in Villa’s hands, however, and if they win their remaining matches they can’t be caught.
Sarr, though, believes that if Spurs take 15 points from their remaining five matches – starting with trips to Chelsea and Liverpool, before they also welcome Manchester City – then they will finish ‘high enough’ – but they’ll be banking on Brighton, Liverpool or Crystal Palace doing them a favour in that scenario.
The most important this is to win all our matches,” he told Sky Sports. “If we win all our matches, we’ll finish high enough. Our objective now is to win all our matches and finish as high as we can. The aim is absolutely to win these matches.
“We have to win our remaining matches to finish this season in the best way possible. Next season will also be here before you know it and if we can manage to put a few wins on the bounce together, that will put us in the best position possible for next year.”
